A Game of Two Halves

by madeinglitch

It’s been a while since I have written about LeinsterI have been so busy that the number of articles I’m writing has declinedHoweverthere is nothing in my life that can get in the way of writing about last Saturday’s 2011 Heineken Cup Final between Leinster and Northampton.

I have seen a lot of great games in a wide variety of sports but this game was probably the best game I have ever watchedThis game epitomized everything I love about sportLeinster were downand seemingly outat halftime trailing 226Northampton was dominating every aspect of the gameTheir scrum was far superiorThey didn’t allow Leinster to hold onto the ball for more than a few phases thus preventing Leinster from getting intorhythmThey were playing with pace and width and were able to open big holes in a strong Leinster defenseBen Foden had a great game as he made it clear that he will be the starting fullback for England in the upcoming World CupFodenPhil Dowson, and Dylan Hartley all scored tries for the Saints in the first 40 minutes.
Thenthe game turned on its headLeinster came out in the second half a different teamThey played at a level I have never seen beforeThey were amazing, to say the leastI find it hard to think of any rugby sideclub or internationalthat could have stopped Leinster in the second halfJonny Sexton led the way scoring two triesHe also added three conversions and four penaltiesAll in allhe had a whopping 27 of Leinster’s 33More importantlyhe was the main voice in an inspirational halftime talkNathan Hines capped off Leinster’s remarkable comeback with a 65th minute try to give Leinster a 3322 lead they would not relinquish.

It was a sensational game that reminded me of the 2005 Champions League Final when Liverpool came back from a 30 deficit against AC Milan at halftime to tie the game at 33 and eventually win 32 on penaltiesLeinster’s victory in the Millennium Stadium is another great step for Irish rugbyIrish teams have now won 4 of the past 6 Heineken Cup tournamentsThe win has resulted in Ireland being entitled to the fourth team in next year’s Heineken Cup competition which means that Connacht will be playing at the top tier of European rugby for the first time ever next season.

Leinsterwith two Heineken Cup triumphs in the last three yearswill look to cap off a hugely successful 2011 season as they face Munster in Thomond Park this Saturday the 28th of May in the 2011 Magners League FinalThe game kicks off at 5:05 pm and will be covered by RTETG4, and BBC.
